Steel toe safety boots: what the ratings mean

A safety boot is a tested product, not a style. The label tells you what it was tested against, and reading it takes about ten seconds once you know the codes.

The standards

• United States — ASTM F2413. Toe caps rated I/75 and C/75: 75 foot-pounds of impact and 2,500 pounds of compression.
• Europe — EN ISO 20345. Toe caps tested to 200 joules of impact and 15 kilonewtons of compression. Codes such as S1, S3 and S3S add slip resistance, water resistance and puncture protection.
• Australia and New Zealand — AS/NZS 2210.3, aligned with the ISO standard.

Steel, alloy or composite

Steel caps are the cheapest and thinnest for the protection they give. Alloy caps, usually aluminium, save weight. Composite caps, made from materials such as carbon fibre or fibreglass, save weight, do not conduct heat or cold, and will not set off a metal detector — but they must be thicker to pass the same test.

Any of them can meet the standard. The rating on the label matters; the material is comfort and preference.

Fit

Try boots on late in the day with the socks you work in. Your toes should not touch the cap when you stand, and your heel should not lift when you walk. A cap that pinches does not stretch — it will pinch for the life of the boot.

Replace a boot after a heavy impact on the toe even if it looks fine. The cap did its job once and may not do it again.
